What is a fire safety plan?
A fire safety plan is a working document that provides information and responsibilities within your building. Our fire safety plans provide an organized structural flow for staff and emergency personal.
Is a fire safety plan required for my building?
A fire safety plan may be required for your building depending on several factors. Section 2.8 of the Ontario Fire Code lists the following examples of buildings where a fire safety plan is needed:

All buildings containing 4 or more stories including basement levels

An assembly occupancy,

A care occupancy,

A care and treatment occupancy,

A detention occupancy,
-
A residential occupancy where the occupant load exceeds 10,

A retirement home,
-
A business and personal services occupancy where the occupant load exceeds 300,
-
A mercantile occupancy where the occupant load exceeds 300,
-
A high hazard industrial occupancy where the occupant load exceeds 25,
-
A medium hazard industrial occupancy where the occupant load exceeds 100
-
A low hazard industrial occupancy where the occupant load exceeds 300.

A fire safety plan is required for my building. What happens if I don't have one?
The building owner is ultimately responsible to be compliant with the Ontario Fire Code. If they are asked by the fire department to present a fire safety plan, and fail to do so, the owner is ultimately responsible and may be responsible for both fines and litigation.
Do I need to hire someone to complete a fire safety plan?
While it is not a requirement to hire someone, it may be beneficial to hire fire safety experts who have eperience in the field.

What will the process look like?
The process is essentially a 3 step process:

preparation (in person or virtual meeting if feasible)

submission to the Authority Having Jurisdiction (Fire Department). This phase may include revisions requested by the inspector

Approval (stamped)
Once approved, our consultants will conduct a FREE virtual implementation training session for your plan, which is a requirement under the Ontario Fire Code (OFC)
How often do I need to update my fire safety plan?
The Ontario Fire Code (OFC) requires an annual review of the fire safety plan, once it is approved. This is done by staff to ensure any changes within the building, staffing, or maintenance is captured to stay up to date with current codes and operation of the building.
